PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi Calls Veteran Cricketers for Key Discussions on Domestic Cricket

KARACHI: In a bid to revamp Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will hold consultations with around two dozen former international cricketers on Monday. The meeting aims to gather feedback and suggestions from these ex-players to make the domestic cricket system more attractive and competitive.

Sources reveal that approximately 30-35 former cricketers are expected to attend the meeting. They will provide their input on improving the domestic cricket structure and will be briefed on three new tournaments, termed “Champions,” that the PCB plans to introduce.

This initiative comes in response to Pakistan’s disappointing performance at the recent T20 World Cup 2024, where the national team failed to progress beyond the group stage. The team’s white-ball coach, Gary Kirsten, has already submitted a confidential assessment report to the PCB chairman, highlighting issues such as player fitness, discipline, and game awareness that contributed to the early exit.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that no decision has been made yet regarding Babar Azam’s future as the team’s captain. This matter, along with other critical issues, will be discussed with the former cricketers and the head coach during the meeting.

In a move aimed at enhancing the overall fitness level of cricketers in Pakistan, the PCB has decided to reintroduce the Yo-Yo fitness test nationwide. Players who fail to meet the required standards will be dropped from not only the national team but also regional teams. This step is intended to ensure that fitness is given paramount importance across all levels of cricket in the country.

The meeting with the former players is seen as a crucial step in the PCB’s efforts to address the shortcomings in the domestic cricket system and prepare the national team for future challenges. By involving seasoned former cricketers in the consultation process, the PCB hopes to bring about substantial improvements that will strengthen Pakistan cricket on both domestic and international fronts.
