The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has unveiled its 20-member squad for the upcoming Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, with Muhammad Abdullah appointed as the captain and Muhammad Murtaza Yaqub as the vice-captain. The squad includes Abdullah Ishtiaq Khan, Saad Shafiq Ali Khan, Ehtesham Aslam, Umar Mustafa, Arbaaz Ayaz, Samiullah, Arshad Liaquat, Abdul Rehman, Abdul Wahab, Muhammad Arsalan, Abdul Qayyum, Bilal Akram, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, Sikandar Ali Zakir, Taimur Javed Khan, Owais Arshad, and Abdul Wajid.
Under the leadership of the venerable Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh, the coaching panel brings a wealth of experience to the table. The team is primed for strategic brilliance and tactical finesse, supported by seasoned coaches Ayaz Mehmood and Waseem Firoz.
The squad is set to depart for Malaysia on May 2, where they will engage in preparatory sessions before their debut match against the Mirban team from Malaysia on May 4.
Overall, the PHF’s squad, guided by experienced coaches and led by Muhammad Abdullah, is geared up for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. With a blend of seasoned veterans and promising talents, Pakistan aims to showcase its prowess on the international stage, starting with its opening clash against Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Volleyball Federation is gearing up to host the Central Asian Volleyball League in Islamabad next month, with six teams already confirming their participation in the event.
Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob, the Chairman of PVF, announced during his visit to the national volleyball team’s training camp at Liaquat Gymnasium in the Pakistan Sports Complex that the federation has scheduled the Central Asian Volleyball League to take place in Islamabad from May 11 to 17.
In addition to Pakistan, teams from Iran, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan are set to participate in the event. There are also hopes that India will send its team to Pakistan, he mentioned.
He expressed that they have approached the government for financial backing to enhance volleyball development and elevate the game’s standards. Yaqoob emphasized their ambition to see the Pakistan team excel in Asia.
Despite facing resource constraints, he highlighted that PVF is committed to providing all feasible amenities to the national players.
The PVF Chairman mentioned that the national team’s training camp is currently in progress here to prepare for the League. While acknowledging Iran’s strength in the event, he expressed optimism about Pakistan’s success in the mega event.
