Pakistan crush Nepal by 238 runs in the Asia Cup Opener

MULTAN: Pakistan delivered a dominant performance in the opening game of the Asia Cup, securing a convincing 238-run victory over Nepal. Nepal struggled in their chase of Pakistan’s formidable target of 343 runs and were eventually out for 104 runs.

Pakistan initially faced some challenges in their batting but managed to post a strong total of 342-6. This was primarily due to standout performances from captain Babar Azam, who impressively scored 151 runs off 131 balls, and middle-order batsman Iftikhar Ahmed, who contributed 109 runs off 71 balls.

Nepal’s response faltered as they struggled against Pakistan’s intense bowling attack. Shadab Khan emerged as the top wicket-taker, securing four wickets for 27 runs in 6.4 overs. Additionally, pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf claimed two wickets each during their five-over spells. Left-arm spinner Muhammad Nawaz also managed to take a wicket.

Among Nepal’s batsmen, Sompal Kami was the highest scorer with 28 runs. Pakistan’s formidable bowling lineup and their dominant batting performance paved the way for their impressive victory in the match.

In their inaugural appearance in the Asia Cup, Nepal displayed skillful bowling to limit the home team to a score of 124-4 by the 28th over. However, they struggled in the final overs as Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed launched an unstoppable attack.

Asia Cup

Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed forged an impressive partnership, amassing 214 runs from 131 balls for the fifth wicket. This dynamic collaboration rejuvenated Pakistan’s position after Babar chose to bat following a toss. Additionally, Nepal’s fielding frequently faltered, offering Pakistan some chances.

Among Nepal’s bowlers, fast bowler Sompal Kami stood out with figures of 2-85.

The 2023 Asia Cup adopts a hybrid model, with Pakistan hosting four matches and Sri Lanka hosting nine. This approach was taken due to India’s decision not to tour Pakistan based on political tensions.
