Lionel Messi, star player for Inter Miami, is gearing up to temporarily bid farewell to his club as he joins Argentina’s 29-member squad for upcoming friendly matches next month.
The World Cup-winning captain is slated to reunite with his national team ahead of their matches against Ecuador and Guatemala in early June, before defending their Copa America title. According to ESPN, the Copa America tournament will take place from June 20 to July 14 in the United States, with Argentina aiming to maintain their championship status after their 2021 victory.
Manager Lionel Scaloni’s squad comprises 22 out of the 26 players from the victorious 2022 Fifa World Cup team in Qatar, including Messi and Angel De Maria.
The final Copa America rosters are set to be confirmed by June 15, with each team consisting of 26 players, as per the announcement by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) last week.
Argentina, led by Messi, is scheduled to commence their Copa America journey against either Canada or Trinidad and Tobago on June 20 in Atlanta, followed by matches against Chile and Peru in Florida’s New Jersey.
