India secured a significant victory in the 2023 Cricket World Cup by defeating defending champions England. In the match at Lucknow’s Ekana Sports City, India maintained their undefeated record in the tournament.
Batting first, India faced challenges in posting a substantial total as England managed to take wickets at crucial junctures. However, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s innings of 87 runs, along with Surya Kumar Yadav’s 49 runs, propelled the team to a modest total of 229 runs in 50 overs, with the loss of nine wickets.
Defending this relatively low target, the Indian bowlers dismantled England’s batting lineup, leading to the defending champions being bowled out for 129 runs in the 35th over. India won by a convincing 100-run margin.
With this victory, India recorded their sixth consecutive win in the tournament, placing them in a strong position for the semi-finals and ranking them first on the points table.
On the other hand, England is on the brink of elimination from the tournament, having registered only one win in six matches. This win came against Bangladesh in Dharamshala.
During the match, a notable record was set as, for the first time in Cricket World Cup history, the number three batsmen from both teams, Virat Kohli and Joe Root, were dismissed without scoring a run.
Mohammad Shami was India’s standout bowler, taking four wickets for 22 runs, while Jasprit Bumrah claimed three wickets. In the second innings, England struggled against India’s pace and spin attack, with their top-order batsmen failing to make an impact.
In their next matches, India will face Sri Lanka on November 2 in Mumbai, while England will take on Australia on November 4 in Ahmedabad.
