Danielle McGahey set to become first transgender to play international cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved Danielle McGahey to play in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Qualifiers, making her the first transgender player to participate in international cricket. McGahey is part of Canada’s squad for the Women’s T20 Americas Qualifier for the T20 World Cup 2024.

McGahey

Originally from Australia, the 29-year-old batter moved to Canada in 2020. She underwent a social transition from male to female in 2020 and completed a medical transition in 2021.

On August 31, the ICC confirmed that McGahey has met the eligibility criteria for the male-to-female (MTF) transition to participate in international cricket.

McGahey has previously played four matches for Canada at the South American Women’s Championship, although that tournament was not of international status.

Los Angeles will host the Women’s T20 Americas Qualifier, featuring the United States, Argentina, Brazil, and Canada, from September 4 to September 11. The winner of this qualifier will advance to the global Qualifiers, where teams from other regional qualifiers will compete for spots in the next T20 World Cup.
