Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has called for an end to the harassment and negative rhetoric she faced during the Paris Olympics after her swift victory over Italian boxer Angela Carini in just 46 seconds, which sparked controversy due to misunderstandings about her gender.
Khelif was disqualified in 2023 due to non-compliance with the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) eligibility requirements. However, this decision was later deemed arbitrary by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which had taken over boxing governance from the IBA, clarifying Khelif’s gender in the process.
She has urged people to cease the online abuse stemming from misconceptions about her gender and to focus on the sport instead. Khelif emphasized the need for an environment free from discrimination, where all athletes are treated with respect and support.
The IOC condemned the abuse and supported her participation, affirming that everyone has the right to compete in sports without facing discrimination.
“The IOC is saddened by the abuse that the two athletes are currently receiving,” the IOC stated. “Every person has the right to practice sport without discrimination.”
In an interview, Khelif discussed her tumultuous Olympic journey and addressed the broader issue of bullying. “I urge everyone worldwide to uphold Olympic principles and refrain from bullying athletes, as it can have severe psychological effects and deepen divisions,” Khelif said in Arabic. “Since my youth, I have aspired to the Olympics as my ultimate goal. I hope to achieve my dream and deliver the best results for my country.”
The Paris Games have been marked by the notable achievements of both Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, who secured their first Olympic medals. However, they have also faced online backlash due to unfounded gender-related allegations, highlighting ongoing debates about gender identity and regulations in sports.
