A Bangladeshi court has ordered the seizure of cricket star Shakib Al Hasan’s assets, adding to his mounting legal troubles tied to his political connections.
Shakib, a former lawmaker affiliated with ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, became a focal point of public outrage following her removal in a student-led uprising last year. Hasina, accused of autocratic rule, fled to India via helicopter after the government’s collapse.
The cricket icon is among several individuals under investigation for a deadly police crackdown on protesters during the uprising, though he has not been formally charged. However, he currently faces prosecution for allegedly bouncing cheques worth over $300,000.
A magistrate in Dhaka ordered the asset seizure on Monday, following an arrest warrant issued in January. Shakib, who was in Canada playing in a domestic Twenty20 league when the upheaval unfolded, has yet to return to Bangladesh.
The left-arm allrounder, one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers, has played 71 Tests, 247 ODIs, and 129 T20Is, amassing a total of 712 wickets across formats.
