The series received approval during a sideline discussion at an ICC meeting held in Dubai.
KARACHI: Pakistan’s Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Friday that they will be organizing a one-day international tri-series featuring South Africa and New Zealand, marking the nation’s first-ever tournament with three participating countries in over two decades.
The decision was made during an International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in Dubai. This event signifies a significant milestone, as international cricket only resumed in Pakistan in 2020, after the tragic attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore back in 2009.
In 2004, Pakistan last hosted a tri-series, featuring Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Following security concerns after certain attacks, Pakistan lost the right to co-host the World Cup two years later.
However, the situation has improved, as evidenced by the upcoming tri-series between Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand. This event is expected to be thrilling, marking the first time in a long while that Pakistan has hosted such a tournament.
Newly elected Pakistan’s Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed enthusiasm for the tri-series, stating that it serves as a prelude to the eight-nation Champions Trophy. This will be the first International Cricket Council (ICC) event in Pakistan since the 1996 World Cup.
Naqvi emphasized the excitement surrounding the event, adding that the PCB looks forward to hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be a significant honor for Pakistan as it will host the top eight One Day International (ODI) teams on its soil.
