A ‘Spider Man’ free climber known for scaling steep rock formations without ropes or safety equipment died after falling into a volcanic crater in southern Yemen, according to media reports.
Al-Qa’qa’ bin Antar, 30, popularly known online as the “Spider-Man of Yemen,” fell while attempting to climb the 120-metre Haradhat Damt volcano crater in Yemen’s Al Dhale province.
The climber had gained widespread attention on social media through videos showing him ascending towering cliffs and volcanic formations without protective gear. His daring stunts attracted thousands of viewers and earned him recognition across the region.
According to reports, bin Antar lost his grip during the climb and plunged into the crater the other day. Footage circulating on social media captured the moment of the fatal fall, further drawing attention to the incident.
Meanwhile, civil defence teams launched a large-scale search and recovery operation shortly after the accident. Rescue workers faced significant challenges due to the crater’s steep rock walls and hazardous terrain. However, after nearly 24 hours of continuous efforts, teams successfully recovered his body on Saturday.
Reports stated that emergency responders deployed diving units, water rescue equipment, and advanced lighting systems to access the difficult location inside the crater. The complex landscape reportedly slowed the recovery mission and increased risks for rescue personnel.
Bin Antar became famous for pushing the limits of free climbing and regularly shared videos of his dangerous ascents. In several clips, he could be seen marking high points on rock faces with white chalk after completing climbs.
Furthermore, previous reports suggested that the climber viewed these risky challenges as a way to earn income. He had reportedly cited poverty and financial hardship as key motivations behind undertaking such dangerous feats.
His death has sparked widespread reactions online, with many social media users expressing sadness over the loss of a climber whose fearless adventures captivated audiences throughout Yemen and beyond.
