A Spanish influencer couple says they were barred from boarding a flight to Puerto Rico after relying on inaccurate visa information from an AI chatbot.
Caldass, one half of the duo, explained that the tool assured her no travel documents were needed. “I always do a lot of research, but I asked the chatbot, and it said no,” she said in a TikTok video that has now surpassed 6 million views. Fighting back tears, she even suggested the chatbot might have “taken revenge” for previous insults she had directed at it.
Online reactions were swift and unforgiving, with some mocking the couple for not consulting official sources. “Natural selection, I suppose,” one user wrote. Another asked, “Who uses a chatbot for visa advice?”
While Spanish citizens don’t need a visa for Puerto Rico, they must secure an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) since the island is a U.S. territory. Critics suggested the couple may have asked the AI an unclear question.
In a separate U.S. case, a 60-year-old man was hospitalized for three weeks with hallucinations, paranoia, and severe anxiety after following dietary guidance from an AI chatbot. The tool reportedly advised replacing table salt with sodium bromide—a toxic compound historically used in sedatives and now mainly found in swimming pool cleaners.
The man was later diagnosed with bromism, a rare condition once common in 19th-century psychiatric wards, marked by delusions, skin rashes, and digestive issues. He had arrived at the hospital claiming his neighbor was trying to poison him.
Disturbingly, medical staff testing the same chatbot found it still recommended sodium bromide as a salt substitute—without any warning of its dangerous effects.
