He emphasized that Europe must also intensify its own efforts as the United States reduces its leadership presence on several international fronts. European leaders maintain engagement with Beijing despite tensions
Sánchez delivered his comments during a speech at Tsinghua University while on his fourth visit to China in four years. His trip followed similar diplomatic engagements earlier this year by leaders from Britain, Ireland, Canada, and Finland, thereby highlighting continued Western outreach to Beijing despite ongoing security and trade concerns. He stated that China could further contribute to global stability by strengthening efforts to combat climate change, improve public health systems, regulate responsible artificial intelligence development, and support nuclear non-proliferation initiatives. Additionally he urged all nations to respect international law and work toward ending conflicts in regions such as Lebanon, Iran, Gaza, the West Bank, and Ukraine. Therefore European policymakers increasingly view multilateral cooperation as essential to managing global risks and sustaining economic growth.
Trade imbalance drives Spain’s push for stronger economic cooperation
Sánchez is expected to hold high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping focusing on geopolitical cooperation and economic relations. He noted that China accounts for a large share of Spain’s trade deficit, which has expanded significantly in recent years. As a result Madrid aims to boost agricultural and manufacturing exports to create a more balanced trading relationship and support long-term economic stability.
