ISLAMABAD: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited has reduced gas supply to six hours per day as Pakistan continues to face a worsening energy shortage affecting millions of households. The utility company announced that consumers will now receive gas only during morning and evening peak hours, while supply will remain suspended in the afternoon due to low system pressure
Under the new arrangement, authorities will provide gas mainly during breakfast and dinner times to prioritize essential domestic needs. Moreover, officials explained that the decision aims to manage limited resources more efficiently as demand continues to exceed supply. Previously, households received gas multiple times a day, but the ongoing shortage has forced a significant reduction. Consequently, even maintaining consistent flow during the two designated time slots has become increasingly difficult, according to internal sources.
Meanwhile, officials linked the disruption to complications in liquefied natural gas imports, which have strained the distribution network. As a result, system pressure has dropped, making it harder to ensure stable supply across urban and rural areas. In addition, energy managers warned that the imbalance between demand and available gas has reached critical levels. Therefore, they urged consumers to use gas judiciously and avoid unnecessary consumption to help manage the shortfall.
The reduced supply is expected to further impact daily household routines, particularly cooking schedules, as families adjust to limited availability. However, authorities maintain that the revised plan remains necessary to sustain minimal nationwide distribution under current constraints.
