Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah Khan has said any proposal to create new provinces remains at an early stage. He stated that the process could take six to eight months to pass through parliament and its committees.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Rana Sanaullah clarified that the PML-N had not initiated the debate on new provinces. He added that if a formal proposal reached parliament, all political parties and lawmakers would have the opportunity to present their views.
He said the matter could then be referred to a parliamentary or standing committee for detailed examination. According to him, considerable time remains before any proposal regarding provincial division comes before parliament.
PML-N Distances Itself From Proposal
Rana Sanaullah questioned the decision to raise the issue at an economic forum. He argued that such platforms are not intended for discussions involving major constitutional and political changes.
He said individuals promoting the proposal may have discussed it with the PML-N. However, he stressed that the party had not launched the project itself.
The adviser also stated that no significant proposal supporting provincial division had emerged from the PML-N. He said the party’s position should be understood in that context.
Bahawalpur Issue and Political Reactions
Discussing Bahawalpur, Rana Sanaullah said PML-N leaders in Punjab opposed including the region in a proposed South Punjab province. He noted that some party members support a separate Bahawalpur province, while others prefer maintaining existing arrangements.
He also said the Pakistan Peoples Party had gained political advantage from the debate. According to him, the issue resonated strongly with PPP workers and supporters.
Commenting on reports of back-channel contacts with PTI founder Imran Khan, Rana Sanaullah said such communication might exist. However, he added that anyone pursuing that route would have to face its consequences.
He also addressed reported differences involving the federal interior minister, saying certain matters should remain within official forums. He stressed that not every issue should be discussed publicly.
