Apple has unveiled the HomePod mini 2, bringing artificial intelligence features, enhanced audio and new colour options to its compact smart speaker. The launch also forms part of the company’s wider expansion of its smart home product lineup.
The new speaker features Apple’s S10 chip and introduces Sound Glow, a visual effect that responds to music. Apple has also expanded its multi-speaker capabilities for a more immersive home entertainment experience.
S10 Chip Powers New Siri AI Features
The HomePod mini 2 uses Apple’s S10 chip to support its upcoming Siri AI experience. The upgraded assistant will offer more natural conversations, broader knowledge and improved music discovery.
Siri AI will also use personal context to help users complete everyday tasks. It can recognise up to six people by their voices and provide information tailored to each household member.
However, Apple will introduce these features through a future software update. Users will also need an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad to enable the required functionality.
Sound Glow Adds Visual Effects to Music
Apple has introduced Sound Glow to give the speaker a new visual feature. The top surface lights up and pulses in sync with music, responding to bass and treble. The effect draws colours from the currently playing song’s album artwork. Users can also select soundscapes, including rain, to create different lighting animations.
Four Speakers Support Home Theatre Setup
The HomePod mini 2 supports a setup of up to four speakers when paired with the new Apple TV 4K. This arrangement enables a surround-sound experience for compatible home entertainment setups.
Users can also connect the speaker to compatible smart home accessories. Voice commands allow them to control devices, adjust settings and run home automations.
Price, Colours and Availability
Apple has priced the HomePod mini 2 at $149 in the United States. Pre-orders opened on October 13 across the US and more than 23 other countries and regions. The speaker will reach stores on October 30. Buyers can choose from five colours: blue, green, pink, midnight and white.
