Six-year-old speedcuber Lian Yunzhi from Chengdu has broken the women’s 3×3 Rubik’s Cube average world record twice within three days.
Lian achieved averages of 4.52 seconds and 4.27 seconds at World Cube Association competitions in Wuhan and Guangzhou. With her second performance, she became the first female speedcuber to record an average below 4.5 seconds.
Young Speedcuber Makes History
Lian first discovered speedcubing through an extracurricular class before her mother encouraged her to pursue the activity further. Since then, she has learned more than 1,300 solving algorithms and practices with her parents for two to three hours each day.
According to the World Cube Association, Lian has competed in 33 events across China and completed 569 official solves. Her personal best stands at 3.54 seconds for the 3×3×3 cube, while she has also solved a 2×2×2 cube in 2.15 seconds.
Practice Drives Remarkable Progress
Lian’s mother said solving Rubik’s Cubes can strengthen focus, memory, logical thinking and spatial awareness. She also explained that speedcubing involves more than memorizing formulas because competitors must use logical reasoning to identify efficient solutions.
Before Lian claimed the record, Qixian Cao held the women’s average record. Cao began cubing at three and recorded a 5.97-second average in 2023 when she was also six years old.
Lian’s latest performances have highlighted the rapid development of young speedcubers. Meanwhile, her extensive daily practice and growing collection of algorithms have helped her compete at the highest level at an unusually young age.
