US diesel prices climbed to a record national average of $6.51 per gallon on Monday as supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions continued to pressure fuel markets, according to Fox13now.
Prices increased 3.9% between July and August alone, while diesel has reportedly become more than 73% more expensive since the war involving the United States and Iran began in February.
President Donald Trump has largely attributed record diesel prices to the war in Ukraine, arguing that Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries have disrupted global supplies.
Those attacks have damaged Russian refining capacity and contributed to tighter diesel availability. However, analysts cited in the report said several other factors were also driving prices higher, including disruptions linked to the US-Iran conflict and instability across the Middle East.
Grassley Calls for Ban on US Diesel Exports
Meanwhile, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa has urged the Trump administration to prohibit US diesel exports in an effort to reduce domestic prices, particularly for farmers and truckers facing higher operating costs.
However, a White House official told Scripps News that the administration was not currently considering an export ban or other restrictions.
Consequently, fuel prices remain exposed to developments affecting international crude and refined-product supplies.
Higher Fuel Costs Could Reach Consumers
The impact could eventually extend beyond motorists and businesses that directly use diesel.
Trucking companies rely heavily on diesel to transport food, consumer products and industrial goods across the country. Farmers also use diesel-powered machinery, while the construction sector depends extensively on heavy equipment.
Therefore, sustained increases in diesel prices could raise production and transportation expenses throughout the economy.
Businesses may ultimately pass some of those additional costs to households through higher prices for food and other goods, potentially widening the economic impact of the record fuel prices.
