Police arrested six Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) workers in Karachi on Wednesday over an alleged road blockade. Authorities accused them of burning motorcycles and tyres at Korangi Crossing to obstruct traffic.
The arrests came during JI’s nationwide strike against the petroleum levy. However, the party said its protest remained peaceful and rejected involvement in the incident.
Police Arrest Six Suspects After Road Blockade
Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police Hussain Janwari confirmed the arrests. He said the suspects allegedly obtained two old motorcycles and tyres from a junk dealer before setting them ablaze.
Police reached the location and controlled the situation after the incident. Meanwhile, videos circulating on social media showed burning tyres and remains of two motorcycles blocking the road.
Despite the obstruction, some motorists continued passing around the burning tyres. Police later registered a first information report against the six suspects under anti-terrorism laws.
JI Denies Involvement in Burning Incident
The JI distanced itself from the incident and blamed unidentified miscreants. The party alleged that the government was using tactics to suppress its nationwide protest.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the law and order situation. He directed authorities to investigate the incident and arrest those responsible without discrimination.
The chief minister also sought a report from the Sindh police chief. He warned that miscreants would not be allowed to disrupt peace in Karachi.
JI acknowledged the arrests and demanded the immediate release of its workers. The party also claimed that traders supported its protest against the petroleum levy.
Police will continue investigating the incident and the allegations against the arrested workers. Authorities are expected to determine who started the fire and whether the suspects participated in the act.
