KARACHI: Sindh has confirmed three new cases of Mpox, raising the province’s total to 40, including 13 cases reported from Karachi.
PCR testing at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital in NIPA confirmed the virus in all three patients. Meanwhile, health authorities have also identified another suspected case, with laboratory results still awaited.
Two of the newly confirmed patients are a father and daughter from interior Sindh, while the third is a 46-year-old resident of Karachi’s Federal B Area.
Health Authorities Await Result of Suspected Case
Officials said the situation would become clearer once the pending test result is received.
The latest cases add to concerns over the spread of Mpox in the province, although authorities have not announced any wider emergency measures.
Mpox is a viral disease caused by a virus from the same family as the smallpox virus. Common symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, fatigue and skin rashes.
Symptoms Can Appear Up to 21 Days After Exposure
Patients may also develop painful or itchy lesions on different parts of the body, including the face, hands, feet, mouth and throat.
Moreover, some patients experience swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin.
In certain cases, visible lesions may appear before other symptoms become noticeable. Consequently, infected individuals may not immediately realise they have contracted the virus.
Health experts say symptoms can take up to 21 days to develop after exposure.
Authorities continue to rely on laboratory testing to confirm suspected infections and track the spread of the disease across Sindh.
With the three latest confirmations, the province’s recorded Mpox tally now stands at 40, while Karachi accounts for 13 of those cases.
