Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said provincial boundaries can only change through a constitutional amendment. He added that the Sindh Assembly would reject any National Assembly move to create new provinces or administrative units in Sindh.
Speaking to the media during a visit to Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi, Shah stressed the importance of mutual consultation. Governor Nihal Hashmi also accompanied him and called for unity based on Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s principles.
Murad Rejects Moves For New Provinces
Murad said no one could be prevented from supporting or opposing the creation of a new province. However, he stressed that the Constitution clearly defines the process for changing provincial boundaries.
He explained that any change requires a constitutional amendment backed by a two-thirds majority. Therefore, the National Assembly cannot independently alter Sindh’s provincial boundaries through an ordinary resolution.
The chief minister said the Sindh Assembly would oppose any such move affecting the province. He also urged political stakeholders to address important national matters through consultation.
Governor Calls For National Unity
Governor Nihal Hashmi said Quaid-e-Azam’s principles should continue guiding Pakistan’s national affairs. He stressed that the country must remain united by following the vision of its founder.
Meanwhile, Murad also discussed the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. He said the federal government and Sindh had reached an agreement on the NFC in June.
According to the chief minister, the existing NFC Award would continue. He said current discussions were focused on administrative divisions rather than changing provincial boundaries.
Murad reiterated that unity remained one of Quaid-e-Azam’s fundamental principles. He also called for mutual consultation before making decisions that could affect the country.
The remarks come amid renewed discussions about administrative divisions and the possible creation of new provinces. Murad maintained that any such change must follow the constitutional procedure.
