India, Qatar and South Africa have joined Germany, Hungary, Turkey and South Korea in the race to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the seven interested countries on Tuesday as preparations for the next host selection process begin.
Other countries can still declare their interest by October 31. Meanwhile, the IOC plans to shortlist candidates in March 2027 before moving selected bidders into further discussions.
India and Qatar Lead Olympic Hosting Race
India aims to host the Olympics for the first time, with Ahmedabad at the centre of its proposed bid. The city will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which officials view as important preparation for staging a major international sporting event.
Qatar also hopes to make history by becoming the first Muslim-majority country to host the Olympics. However, Doha would likely need to move the Games away from the traditional July-August schedule because of extreme summer temperatures.
South Africa Seeks Africa’s First Olympics
South Africa is pursuing an opportunity to become the first African country to host the Olympics. The country previously hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 1995 Rugby World Cup but has never staged the Games.
Germany, Hungary, Turkey and South Korea complete the current list of interested nations. The IOC will assess potential hosts based on funding, political and public support, technical capabilities, athlete experience and their ability to deliver a lasting legacy.
The IOC expects to select the preferred host through a vote in 2029. Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympics, while Brisbane will stage the 2032 Games.
