Pakistan’s security forces have foiled an attempt by militants to cross into Kurram from Afghanistan, according to security sources.
The attempted infiltration came from Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces, while Afghan Taliban forces later opened fire on Pakistani border posts, the sources said.
Militants Attempt to Enter Kurram
Security sources said the infiltrators were identified as members of Fitna al-Khawarij, a term used by Pakistani authorities for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Security forces detected and stopped the attempted border crossing.
Following the failed infiltration, Afghan Taliban personnel allegedly opened fire on Pakistani check posts along the border.
The sources described the firing as unprovoked.
Pakistani troops responded by targeting several Afghan Taliban check posts and defensive positions, according to the sources.
Several Afghan Taliban personnel reportedly fled their positions following the response.
Security Forces Maintain Border Vigilance
Security forces continued monitoring the border situation and remained prepared to respond to any further aggression, according to the sources.
The latest incident comes amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Pakistan has repeatedly accused militant groups of using Afghan territory to plan and carry out attacks inside the country. Pakistani officials have also called on the Afghan Taliban administration to take action against militant sanctuaries.
Recent Operations Raise Border Tensions
The latest development follows several recent counter-terrorism operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
On September 21, Pakistan said its forces carried out airstrikes against militant targets in the Afghanistan border region, reporting that more than 28 militants were killed. Reuters reported that Afghan Taliban officials and the United Nations confirmed three civilian deaths from the strikes.
The escalation also follows deadly attacks in KP, including the recent assault on the Old Police Lines in Kohat.
Munir Reviews KP Security
A day earlier, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Peshawar Corps Headquarters.
He received a briefing on the security situation in KP, ongoing counter-terrorism operations, border management and the operational preparedness of formations deployed in the province.
Munir directed troops to remain vigilant and maintain high standards of operational readiness, according to ISPR.
The latest Kurram incident adds to growing security concerns along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border as Pakistani forces continue counter-terrorism operations in KP.
