Breakthrough Research Targets Virus Affecting 95% of Adults
Scientists have developed new antibodies that may help block the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), one of the most common viruses worldwide.
Researchers say EBV infects nearly 95 percent of adults and often causes mild or no symptoms. However, the virus remains inside the body permanently after infection.
The virus has been linked to several serious health conditions, including certain cancers, multiple sclerosis and other immune-related diseases.
New Antibodies Attack Key Viral Proteins
A research team from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington developed 10 new antibodies designed to target EBV proteins.
The antibodies focus on two important surface proteins called gp350 and gp42. These proteins help the virus enter B cells, which play a major role in the immune system.
By blocking these proteins, scientists aim to prevent EBV from infecting immune cells and causing further complications.
Study Shows Promising Results in Laboratory Tests
During experiments with specially designed mice carrying human-like immune systems, one antibody showed strong protection against EBV infection.
Researchers used genetically modified mice capable of producing human antibodies, which could improve the possibility of future human treatment development.
The breakthrough may provide new hope for patients with weakened immune systems, especially organ and bone marrow transplant recipients.
These patients often receive immune-suppressing medicines, increasing their risk of severe EBV-related complications.
The study was published in Cell Reports Medicine. Scientists said further research and human trials are required before the antibodies can become a possible medical treatment.
