ISLAMABAD: The United States on Monday signaled plans to impose steep tariffs—reaching up to 3,521%—on solar panels imported from Southeast Asia, in an effort to counter what it says are unfair Chinese subsidies and dumping practices in the solar sector.
Chinese manufacturers Jinko Solar and Trina Solar are among the companies targeted by the proposed duties.
According to the U.S. Commerce Department, products originating from Cambodia could face tariffs as high as 3,521%. Jinko Solar would be hit with a 40% duty on exports from Malaysia and approximately 245% on shipments from Vietnam. Trina Solar faces more than 375% in duties on exports from Thailand and over 200% from Vietnam.
These proposed tariffs would come on top of a blanket 10% levy implemented by the Trump administration in early April on imports from most trading partners.
In 2023, the U.S. imported $11.9 billion worth of solar cells from the Southeast Asian countries affected by this latest trade action, according to official data.
