Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has unveiled a new social networking platform as a potential competitor to Twitter. This move is seen as an attempt to take advantage of the ongoing challenges faced by Twitter.
In a welcoming post, Zuckerberg wrote, “Let’s do this. Welcome to Threads,” signaling the company’s enthusiasm for this new venture.
In another post following the app’s launch, Zuckerberg expressed his belief that the world needs a friendly community like Threads. He also expressed gratitude to the early adopters of the app, stating, “I’m grateful to all of you who are part of Threads from day one.”
Threads positions itself as a text-based version of Instagram, with a focus on real-time updates and public conversations. The app will initially be available in over 100 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan.
However, Threads won’t launch in the EU yet due to ongoing negotiations between Meta and regulators on data sharing management.
‘Sanely Run’ platform
British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, actor Jack Black, and pop star Shakira were among the initial prominent figures to join Threads.
Mark Zuckerberg’s launch of Threads, is often referred to as a potential “Twitter killer” by tech analysts. Musk’s leadership of Twitter has faced significant criticism from certain users, and this move by Zuckerberg is likely to intensify the rivalry between the two billionaire tech leaders.
During a recent event, Chief Product Officer of Meta Chris Cox mentioned the demand for a “sanely run platform,”. In response, Musk jokingly suggested a cage match with Zuckerberg, who has a background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Zuckerberg responded to Musk’s challenge on Instagram, replying with “Send Me Location.”
Meta’s decision to take on Twitter comes after a period of turmoil at the social media company, marked by issues such as mass layoffs, technical glitches, and controversies surrounding content moderation. As a result, advertisers have been leaving the platform.
Threads can leverage Instagram’s user base and advertiser connections by allowing access through existing accounts, analysts suggest. This integration could potentially benefit the new social media network.
However, it is important to note that previous attempts to challenge Twitter have faced limited success. Alternative platforms such as Mastodon, Bluesky, and Post have not been able to match the widespread reach and influence of Twitter, which boasts over 400 million users globally.
