The Saudi-led coalition has launched a major military operation against Houthi positions in Yemen’s Red Sea province of Hudaida, targeting weapons and naval facilities, according to TRT World.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said naval forces struck Houthi military sites along the coastline. The attacks destroyed weapons depots, facilities containing explosive-laden boats and naval mines, he said.
Al-Maliki added that the operation disrupted preparations for what he described as imminent attacks against maritime routes in the southern Red Sea.
The strikes came as Yemen’s internationally recognised government expanded its military campaign against the Houthis. Yemeni forces have launched an offensive aimed at retaking Sanaa, the capital controlled by the group since 2014. The coalition also reported that around 100 warplanes conducted dawn sorties across Yemen.
The Yemeni government has declared the recovery of Houthi-controlled territories as its broader military objective. The campaign follows major battlefield developments in recent weeks, particularly along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
The Houthi movement, meanwhile, claimed it carried out retaliatory drone and ballistic missile attacks against targets inside Saudi Arabia. The group said it targeted Riyadh airport, an Aramco refinery in Rabigh, Abha airport, Khamis Mushait airbase, Najran and a military camp in Asir.
The escalation follows territorial changes involving the Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints for commercial shipping and oil transportation.
The latest fighting represents a significant escalation in Yemen’s prolonged conflict, raising further concerns about regional security and the safety of international shipping through the Red Sea.
