The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthi movement intercepted and destroyed four missiles targeting different parts of Saudi Arabia on Sunday. The intercepted weapons included two ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles, according to a military announcement.
Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al Maliki confirmed the interceptions and said air defence systems successfully neutralised the incoming threats. The operation targeted missiles approaching Riyadh and the kingdom’s southern regions.
Air Defences Destroy Missiles Over Riyadh and Southern Regions
The coalition confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted two cruise missiles targeting Riyadh and southern Saudi Arabia. However, officials did not provide further details about the missiles’ origins or their intended targets.
Earlier, Al Maliki announced that air defence systems had destroyed two ballistic missiles launched towards the Saudi capital. The interceptions followed reports of explosions and increased security alerts across Riyadh.
Saudi authorities also reported intercepting another ballistic missile targeting the kingdom’s Eastern Province earlier on Sunday. Consequently, several regions remained on heightened alert as security forces monitored potential aerial threats.
Rising Military Tensions Increase Regional Security Concerns
The latest interceptions come amid escalating military confrontations between the Saudi-led coalition and Yemen’s Houthi movement. The group has repeatedly targeted Saudi territory using missiles and drones.
Meanwhile, the renewed attacks have increased concerns about the security of major cities, energy facilities and other critical infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has strengthened its air defence measures to protect important locations from further attacks.
The latest developments also follow reports of Saudi airstrikes near Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. Houthi officials claimed that the strikes killed dozens of people, although independent confirmation of the reported casualties remained unavailable.
Furthermore, the continuing confrontations have raised fears of a wider regional escalation as military activities intensify across the Middle East.
