Defence Ministry says petroleum facilities and Riyadh were among the reported targets
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence said it intercepted a number of drones that it claimed were launched from Iraqi territory and were heading towards strategic locations inside the Kingdom.
According to an official statement, the drones were allegedly targeting petroleum facilities in the Eastern Region as well as the capital, Riyadh. The ministry said Saudi air defence systems successfully intercepted the incoming aircraft before they reached their intended destinations.
The ministry further alleged that the attempted attacks were carried out by Iranian-backed armed groups operating from Iraqi territory. However, it did not immediately provide evidence to support the claim or specify the number of drones intercepted.
Saudi authorities did not report casualties or damage resulting from the incident.
Allegations remain disputed
The Saudi Defence Ministry described the attempted strikes as “terrorist attempts” and said security forces remained prepared to respond to threats against the Kingdom’s critical infrastructure.
At the time of publication, neither the Iraqi government nor Iranian officials had publicly responded to the allegations. The claims could not be independently verified.
No armed group had claimed responsibility for the reported drone launches, and additional details about the incident were not immediately available.
Regional tensions remain elevated
The reported interception comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, where attacks involving drones and missiles have raised concerns over regional security and the safety of energy infrastructure.
