The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia amid escalating regional tensions and security concerns.
The tournament, originally scheduled for January 7 to February 5, 2027, will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028.
The AFC announced the revised schedule on Tuesday, November 3, following consultations with Saudi Arabia’s local organising committee and football federation.
AFC Cites Security and Travel Challenges
The AFC said exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region had created significant logistical difficulties and travel disruptions.
The governing body said these challenges made rescheduling necessary to protect the interests of participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders.
The decision follows heightened security concerns after recent attacks on Saudi Arabia, including a deadly strike targeting Riyadh’s international airport.
These developments have also disrupted other sporting events across the region.
New Dates Await FIFA Approval
The AFC confirmed that the revised tournament dates will be submitted to FIFA for approval.
The 24-team competition will feature national teams from across Asia. Saudi Arabia will host the tournament across venues in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.
The AFC also praised the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and local organisers for their continued preparations.
Organisers are expected to work with participating teams, sponsors and broadcasting partners to minimise disruption caused by the schedule change.
Saudi Arabia Continues Preparations
Saudi Arabia had been preparing to host its first edition of the men’s Asian Cup. The country had planned to stage the tournament in January despite growing concerns about regional security.
However, the latest decision moves the competition nearly 11 months from its original opening date.
The postponement highlights how regional instability can affect major international sporting events. The AFC will now coordinate with FIFA and Saudi organisers to finalise arrangements for the rescheduled competition.
