Saudi Arabia reportedly carried out 28 airstrikes across Yemen over the past 24 hours as fighting between the Houthis and the Riyadh-backed government intensifies.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said Sunday that Saudi aircraft targeted areas in the governorates of Taiz, Al-Jawf and Marib.
According to Saree, the Saudi air force used F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets during the attacks. He said the aircraft operated from the Khamis Mushait and Taif airbases.
Houthis Expand Control Along Yemen’s Coast
The latest escalation follows a major Houthi offensive launched this month. The Iran-backed group already controls most of Yemen’s populated areas.
The Houthis have now moved to seize the country’s Red Sea coastline, potentially giving them control over the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The group has maintained that maritime navigation through the strait remains open. However, it says Saudi vessels are excluded from that access.
Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition said Saturday that the Houthis launched a ballistic missile toward Riyadh at dawn. A fire was also reported near the Saudi capital’s international airport.
Yemen War Enters New Phase
Yemen’s conflict began in 2014 when the Houthis captured the capital, Sanaa. Although fighting largely remained frozen after a 2022 truce, the conflict intensified again in July.
Saudi Arabia has led a coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government since 2015. Its military intervention significantly escalated the conflict.
The prolonged war has also created a severe humanitarian crisis. The United Nations warned in 2025 that around 17 million Yemenis were struggling to access enough food, while another one million faced extreme hunger.
