Samsung could bring back its under-display selfie camera with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold9, according to a new leak. The technology would allow users to enjoy the foldable phone’s large inner screen without a visible camera cutout.
The device is expected to arrive in 2027. However, Samsung has not officially confirmed the smartphone or its reported features.
Under-Display Selfie Camera May Return
Samsung first introduced the hidden selfie camera with the Galaxy Z Fold3 in 2021. The company continued using the technology through the Galaxy Z Fold6 before replacing it with a traditional punch-hole camera.
The Galaxy Z Fold7 and subsequent Fold8 models feature visible selfie camera cutouts on their inner displays. Now, a tipster claims Samsung could reverse that decision with its next-generation foldable.
The leak also suggests major internal hardware improvements, although specific camera details remain unknown. Samsung has yet to comment on these reports.
Galaxy Z Fold9 Could Feature a Thinner Design
Earlier reports suggested Samsung was developing the Galaxy Z Fold9 with a slimmer body. The alleged targets include 3.9mm thickness when unfolded and 7.9mm when folded.
For comparison, the wide Galaxy Z Fold8 measures 4.5mm when unfolded and 9.7mm when folded. However, these figures remain unconfirmed and appear inconsistent with claims of minimal design changes.
The tipster also suggests Samsung is positioning the Fold9 against Apple’s first foldable smartphone. That device reportedly features a 4MP under-display selfie camera.
An under-display camera can provide a cleaner screen appearance, but image quality remains a challenge. Samsung may need improvements to make the technology more practical.
The Galaxy Z Fold9 could launch in the second half of 2027. Nevertheless, its specifications, pricing and release date remain unannounced.
