The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has launched a Rs16 billion project to expand digital surveillance across 98 tehsils of the province.
The project will add around 10,000 new surveillance cameras as Punjab moves to extend technology-based policing beyond major urban centres.
Officials said the expansion follows encouraging results from the existing Safe City network. Authorities have reported a 70% reduction in heinous and serious crime across Punjab.
Safe City Network to Reach 98 Tehsils
Under the new programme, authorities will extend surveillance coverage to tehsil-level areas.
The government also plans to expand digital monitoring to 7,602 union councils across Punjab. This would significantly increase the reach of technology-driven policing in smaller communities.
Meanwhile, Safe City operations are already functioning in nearly 40 cities. The province currently has 43 Smart Safe City centres providing round-the-clock surveillance and operational support to law enforcement agencies.
More Than 24,000 Cameras Already Active
Punjab already has more than 24,000 high-definition cameras monitoring roads, markets, highways and public spaces.
The network uses artificial intelligence to analyse surveillance footage and assist police operations. These systems can identify suspicious activity, detect stolen vehicles and track crime patterns.
Moreover, PSCA uses more than a dozen in-house AI systems, including automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), facial recognition, Smart Vision, crime analytics and intelligent traffic management.
AI to Strengthen Crime Prevention
The technology also allows authorities to analyse large amounts of surveillance data more quickly.
As a result, police can receive information about suspicious behaviour, potential crime hotspots and other incidents requiring attention.
The PSCA has also been integrating its systems with other policing bodies. Officials said coordination between the PSCA, Crime Control Department (CCD) and district police has improved surveillance, crime prevention and rapid response.
Punjab Expands Technology-Based Policing
The latest expansion forms part of Punjab’s wider Safe Punjab initiative.
Earlier this month, Punjab also introduced body-worn cameras for police and other law enforcement personnel. The cameras are being linked with Smart Safe City systems to enable live monitoring through district control rooms.
With the new Rs16 billion project, Punjab is now moving its digital surveillance network further into tehsil and union council areas.
Authorities say the expansion will strengthen technology-based policing and improve the ability of law enforcement agencies to monitor incidents across the province.
