MOSCOW: Russia carried out a successful test launch of its advanced Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile. The Strategic Missile Forces commander briefed President Vladimir Putin on the positive outcome of the trial on Tuesday.
Putin hails Sarmat as worldโs most powerful
President Putin announced that Russia plans to formally induct the Sarmat into service by the end of this year. He described the missile as the worldโs most powerful nuclear weapon system. Putin claimed it can strike targets thousands of miles away, including locations in the United States and Europe.
Moreover, he highlighted its impressive capabilities during a televised statement. The Russian leader said the Sarmat carries a warhead payload four times greater than comparable Western systems. He added that the missile boasts a range exceeding 35,000 kilometres and can overcome existing and future missile defence systems.
Strategic boost amid global tensions
Defence officials view the test as an important milestone for Russiaโs nuclear deterrent force. The Sarmat, also known as Satan II in the West, forms a key part of Moscowโs modernisation programme for its strategic arsenal. Military experts note that the heavy liquid-fuelled ICBM replaces older systems and strengthens Russiaโs second-strike capability.
Furthermore, the successful launch comes at a time of heightened international tensions. Putin and senior commanders continue to emphasise the missileโs role in maintaining strategic stability. The test demonstrates Russiaโs commitment to advancing its defence technologies despite economic and geopolitical challenges.
Analysts say the Sarmatโs deployment will significantly enhance Russiaโs long-range strike options. The countryโs leadership now focuses on completing final trials and preparations for operational service. This development draws close attention from global powers monitoring shifts in the nuclear balance. Many observers expect the Sarmat to become a cornerstone of Russiaโs future strategic forces.
