Russia and Pakistan are working to establish their first direct freight rail services between the two countries. The proposed rail links would connect Moscow with Faisalabad and Karachi in both directions.
Russian Ambassador Albert Khorev confirmed the development while discussing the proposed routes in an interview.
The two countries are currently working with their respective partners to establish the freight connections.
Moscow-Faisalabad and Moscow-Karachi Routes Planned
The proposed freight network would establish rail connections between Moscow and two major Pakistani cities. One route would connect Moscow with Faisalabad. The other would link Moscow with Karachi.
The services would operate in both directions, allowing commercial cargo to move between Russia and Pakistan. The proposed routes could create a new rail option for businesses transporting goods between the two countries.
However, the ambassador did not provide a timeline for when the freight services could begin.
Belarus Could Join Proposed Rail Network
Russia and Pakistan are also considering possible participation by Belarus. According to Ambassador Khorev, the country could potentially become part of the proposed rail network.
The possible involvement of Belarus remains under consideration. Meanwhile, Russia and Pakistan are continuing discussions over the structure of the freight services.
The proposed network would therefore involve cooperation among the countries connected to the planned routes.
Regional Tensions Caused Earlier Delays
The freight rail project has faced several delays. Khorev attributed the delays to heightened geopolitical tensions in the region during 2025 and early 2026.
Despite those setbacks, work on the proposed rail connections is continuing.
The participating sides are now focusing on finalising the necessary arrangements. They are also working to identify companies interested in using the proposed corridor.
Agreement and Transport Companies Still Being Finalised
The countries involved are currently finalising an agreement covering the proposed freight services. At the same time, they are identifying companies located along the proposed routes.
These companies could transport their goods through the planned corridor.
The process will help determine commercial interest in the proposed freight links. It will also support discussions around how the services would operate. However, no launch timeline has been announced so far.
New Rail Route Could Connect Russian and Pakistani Markets
The proposed Moscow-Faisalabad and Moscow-Karachi services would provide another route for commercial cargo between Russia and Pakistan.
