Russia launched a record number of missiles at Ukraine in July, according to Ukrainian Air Force latest data. The sharp increase came as Kyiv renewed its appeal for additional anti-ballistic defence systems.
The data showed Russia fired 376 missiles during July, more than double the number launched in June. Meanwhile, both countries have intensified long-range attacks as the war continues into its fifth year.
Russian forces also carried out fresh strikes on Kyiv on Saturday, killing at least nine people, according to Ukrainian officials.
Missile attacks intensify despite fewer drones
Many of the July attacks targeted the Ukrainian capital, where some of the deadliest strikes since the war began occurred. At least 30 people died during a large-scale attack on July 2.
Although Russia launched 4,956 long-range drones during the month, the total represented a 14 percent decline from June.
Ukraine continues intercepting most incoming drones. However, it still depends heavily on military assistance from allied countries to counter missile attacks, especially ballistic missiles.
Kyiv warns of air defence shortages
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine faces critical shortages of advanced air defence systems needed to intercept Russia’s growing use of ballistic missiles.
Military analysts estimate Russia used between 200 and 300 ballistic missiles throughout 2024. In contrast, Russian forces reportedly launched 126 such missiles during July 2026 alone.
According to the AFP analysis, Ukrainian forces intercepted fewer than one-third of those ballistic missiles.
Meanwhile, Zelensky visited the White House in late July to seek additional US-made Patriot interceptors. However, President Donald Trump later said Washington must act carefully before making any decision on expanding the programme.
