Senior lawyer Ahsan Bhoon has filed a Rs5 billion defamation suit against retired Captain Muhammad Safdar over allegations that Bhoon holds a fake law degree. The dispute centres on Safdar’s public remarks questioning the authenticity of Bhoon’s educational qualifications.
Bhoon, a member of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), has challenged the allegations and sought legal redress.
Dispute Over Law Degree
The controversy began in September when Safdar publicly questioned Bhoon’s LLB degree. He also called for verification of the academic credentials of other prominent lawyers.
Safdar subsequently approached the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, requesting an independent review of Bhoon’s educational qualifications, enrolment and professional record.
Bhoon rejected the allegations and demanded their withdrawal, a public apology and Rs5 billion in damages. His legal action follows the dispute over claims that his law degree was not genuine.
Bar Council Verifies Bhoon’s Credentials
The Pakistan Bar Council later declared the degrees of its elected members, including Bhoon, genuine. The council said the relevant universities had verified the qualifications during its electoral processes.
According to the council, the verification process covered elections held in 2020 and 2025. It also said some previously verified degrees underwent further checks with universities and the Higher Education Commission.
These findings added another development to the dispute between the two men.
Legal Battle Takes a New Turn
Bhoon previously served as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and heads the Independent Group, also known as the Asma Jahangir Group.
Safdar, the husband of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has defended his demand for lawyers to produce their degrees. He has argued that verifying professional qualifications serves the public interest.
The defamation proceedings now place the dispute before the legal system. The court’s handling of the case will determine how the competing claims proceed.
