Security sources blame Iran for strike northeast of Kurdish regional capital as officials report no casualties
ERBIL: A rocket attack struck a training camp belonging to an Iranian-Kurdish opposition group northeast of Erbil in Iraq’s Kurdistan region on Tuesday, security sources said, blaming Iran for carrying out the assault.
The rockets hit the facility outside Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. However, initial reports indicated that the attack caused no casualties.
Security sources did not immediately provide details about the number or type of rockets used, the precise extent of damage at the facility or the specific Iranian-Kurdish organisation operating the targeted camp.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities had not immediately commented on the accusations surrounding the strike.
Security Sources Point to Iranian Involvement
The attack places renewed attention on the presence of Iranian-Kurdish opposition organisations inside northern Iraq and the continuing security tensions surrounding their activities.
Iran has previously accused Kurdish opposition groups operating from Iraqi territory of carrying out or supporting activities that threaten Iranian national security.
Consequently, the presence of such organisations near Iran’s western border has remained a sensitive issue in relations involving Tehran, Baghdad and authorities in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
