Rawal Dam Spillways
ISLAMABAD: In response to the rapidly rising water levels caused by persistent rainfall in the federal capital, authorities have announced that the spillways of Rawal Dam will be opened at 6:00 AM on Sunday, July 20. The announcement was made by the Deputy Commissionerโs Office, citing that the damโs water level had surged to 1,748 feet โ necessitating immediate regulatory action.
The decision to open the spillways comes as a precautionary and essential measure to manage the increasing inflow of water from surrounding catchment areas and to prevent any potential overflow of the reservoir. The move is part of standard dam management protocol aimed at maintaining the structural integrity of the dam and ensuring the safety of nearby communities.
Residents living in low-lying regions, especially those located along the Korang Nullah, have been urged to remain vigilant and adopt all necessary safety measures.
The district administration has specifically advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel or activities near water streams, nullahs, and other vulnerable areas during this period. Movement near such areas could pose serious risks due to sudden increases in water flow following the spillway opening.
To ensure a swift and effective response to any emergencies, rescue services and relevant government departments have been placed on high alert. Teams have been deployed in potentially affected areas to assist residents and monitor the situation closely.
Emergency hotlines and communication channels will remain active throughout the day, and citizens are encouraged to follow updates from official sources only.
The administration has also requested full public cooperation to avoid panic and facilitate smooth management of the situation. Authorities have reiterated that these measures are preemptive in nature and essential for ensuring public safety.
As heavy monsoon rains continue across the region, officials will be closely monitoring water levels and weather patterns. Any further action will be communicated promptly through official government platforms.
