Parrot registration mandatory
The Punjab Wildlife Department has made parrot registration mandatory across the province to protect endangered species and curb the illegal bird trade.
Registration Process and Fee
Deputy Chief Wildlife Ranger Lahore Region Adnan Warraich explained the new system in detail. Owners must pay a registration fee of Rs 1,000 per bird. After registration, officials will tag each parrot with a ring bearing a unique identification number.
Applicability of the Policy
The policy applies to commercial breeders, shopkeepers, and individuals keeping parrots as household pets. In cases of breeding, owners must also register every new offspring separately. This ensures that all parrots remain documented under official records.
Ban on Illegal Bird Sales
Officials clarified that the open sale of wild birds and animals remains banned across Punjab. Lahore’s Tollinton Market, a historic hub of bird trading, will remain under strict monitoring. Only licensed breeders and registered dealers will sell parrots legally under the new policy.
Wildlife Experts’ Concerns
Wildlife experts have repeatedly expressed concern over the declining populations of native parrot species in Punjab. The unchecked illegal trade has placed several species at serious risk. Experts believe the registration policy will help authorities track birds effectively and safeguard their populations.
Step Toward Wildlife Protection
The new parrot registration system marks a significant step in protecting biodiversity. With strict monitoring and regulation, the government hopes to discourage illegal trade and support conservation efforts.
