Punjab Mass Transit Authority on Thursday announced a two-day suspension of Metro Bus, Electric Bus, and Speedo Bus services in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. The authority said the decision aims to support security operations during Ashura-related activities across Punjab.
Services suspended in major cities
According to a PMTA spokesperson, the suspension will apply to all major mass transit services in the three cities. As a result, commuters will not be able to use Metro Bus, Electric Bus, or Speedo Bus services during the specified period. Officials urged passengers to make alternate travel arrangements in advance.
Security measures for Ashura events
Authorities said they took the decision to facilitate security arrangements for mourning processions and religious gatherings. During Ashura, large crowds gather in different areas, which increases the need for strict monitoring and controlled movement. Therefore, officials decided to limit public transport operations to reduce risks.
Lahore procession prompts added controls
In Lahore, officials have scheduled a major mourning procession to begin from Mori Gate. Consequently, law enforcement agencies have planned enhanced security and traffic management measures in surrounding areas. The suspension of bus services will help authorities manage road closures and crowd movement more effectively.
Focus on public safety
Officials stressed that the temporary suspension forms part of broader safety efforts during Ashura. Moreover, authorities aim to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of religious observances across the province. They added that public transport services will resume once security conditions return to normal.
Meanwhile, authorities advised citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and follow official announcements to avoid inconvenience during the suspension period.
