To improve air quality and tackle worsening smog, the Punjab government has announced a strict crackdown on smoke-emitting commercial and construction vehicles. Vehicle owners have been given a final seven-day deadline to repair unfit vehicles before authorities begin province-wide enforcement under a zero-tolerance policy.
Director General Environment Punjab Musa Raza reviewed the ongoing anti-smog campaign during visits to Jinnah Terminal at Thokar Niaz Baig and the Saggian entry points in Lahore. During the inspection, he monitored vehicle checking operations and assessed enforcement measures aimed at reducing air pollution.
Commercial Vehicles Given Final Seven-Day Notice
During the visit, Musa Raza instructed officials to issue final notices to owners and transporters of smoke-emitting commercial vehicles. He directed them to improve vehicle fitness within seven days to meet environmental standards.
Furthermore, he warned that authorities would launch strict action immediately after the deadline. The department will enforce a zero-tolerance policy against vehicles that continue to release excessive smoke.
Moreover, the operation will not focus only on public transport vehicles. It will also target industrial labour transport, courier services, delivery vans, bakery supply vehicles, and all commercial vehicles entering Lahore each day.
Construction Vehicles Must Follow Dust Control Rules
The Environment Department has also tightened regulations for vehicles transporting construction materials. Musa Raza directed officials to issue seven-day notices to tractor-trolleys and other construction vehicles.
In addition, he instructed transporters to fully comply with fugitive dust standard operating procedures. According to the new instructions, construction materials must remain completely covered during transportation.
If any vehicle enters Lahore without properly covered material, officials will seize the load immediately. They will also impound the vehicle for three days and impose heavy fines on those responsible.
The Punjab government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing air pollution and controlling smog across the province. Therefore, all relevant departments will continue coordinated enforcement to ensure environmental regulations are followed. Officials believe these measures will encourage better vehicle maintenance, reduce harmful emissions, and help provide cleaner and healthier air for residents.
