The Punjab government has approved the recruitment of 3,565 traffic assistants and constables for the provincial police force.
The decision aims to address a shortage of personnel across Punjab Police. Moreover, the recruitment is expected to strengthen the force’s ability to meet security needs.
The hiring decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by the Punjab chief minister. Following the approval, the recruitment process is expected to begin soon.
Recruitment to Take Place in Two Phases
The government has decided to complete the recruitment process in two phases. Half of the sanctioned positions will be filled during the first phase.
The remaining positions will be filled during the third quarter of fiscal year 2026-27. Therefore, the recruitment will be spread across the approved timeline.
During the first phase, the government will recruit 1,782 constables. These positions will be filled in the General Executive Cadre.
The phased approach will allow the provincial government to gradually fill the approved positions. At the same time, it will help address the existing shortage within the police force.
Why Punjab Police Needs More Personnel
The Punjab government said additional recruitment is necessary to meet the staffing requirements of the provincial police.
According to the Police Rules 1934, one police official is assigned to provide security for every 450 people.
However, the existing personnel shortage has created a need for additional recruitment. As a result, the government has approved thousands of new positions for traffic assistants and constables.
The latest decision focuses on strengthening the available workforce. It also seeks to improve the police force’s capacity to respond to security requirements across the province.
3,565 Positions Approved
The approval covers a total of 3,565 positions. These include traffic assistants and constables for the Punjab Police.
The first phase will account for half of the sanctioned recruitment. Meanwhile, the remaining half will be filled in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026-27.
The first phase specifically includes 1,782 constable positions under the General Executive Cadre.
Consequently, the recruitment plan is designed to gradually increase police strength. It also reflects the government’s stated need to address personnel gaps.
Recruitment Expected to Begin Soon
With the cabinet approval in place, the hiring process is expected to begin soon.
The recruitment will proceed according to the two-phase plan approved by the government. Initially, 50% of the sanctioned positions will be filled.
Later, the remaining 50% will be recruited during the specified quarter of fiscal year 2026-27.
The move is expected to provide additional personnel to the provincial police force. Ultimately, the government aims to strengthen Punjab Police and meet its security staffing requirements.
Focus on Strengthening Punjab Police
