The Punjab government has decided to introduce a new vehicle registration system. Under the proposed policy, vehicles and motorcycles will be registered before leaving dealerships. The initiative aims to simplify the registration process across the province.
Dealers To Join New Registration System
According to Excise Department officials, all vehicle dealers in Punjab will join the Dealer Vehicle Registration System. Authorities have instructed Motor Registration Authorities to contact dealers. They will also invite them to participate in the new registration process.
Officials said the department submitted a summary to the government. The proposal seeks easier issuance of DVRS licences while reducing related licensing fees.
Currently, Punjab has 102 licensed DVRS dealers. Among them, 96 dealers can register motorcycles. Meanwhile, only six dealers have permission to register cars.
Service Charges Likely To Increase
The Excise Department also proposed higher registration service charges. Motorcycle registration charges may increase from Rs500 to Rs1,000. Likewise, vehicle registration charges may rise from Rs2,000 to Rs4,000.
However, the Car Dealers Association expressed reservations about the proposal. Representatives questioned the decision to issue licences to every vehicle showroom. They also raised concerns about the implementation of the new registration system.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government is reviewing the proposal before making a final decision. Authorities expect the new system to streamline vehicle registration and improve service delivery across the province.
