Punjab is preparing to launch a free kidney and liver transplant programme at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) Rawalpindi.
The announcement came during Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique’s visit to the hospital on Thursday. He visited the facility on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The minister reviewed clinical operations, healthcare services and facilities available to patients during the visit. He also inspected different departments and spoke with patients about their experiences.
Punjab Plans Free Transplant Programme
During a meeting with PKLI Rawalpindi’s management, Rafique received a briefing on the hospital’s performance and healthcare services. Officials also discussed administrative matters and the facility’s ongoing operations.
Rafique then announced that the Punjab government would soon launch a free kidney and liver transplant programme. The initiative will operate under the chief minister’s programme.
The announcement could provide greater access to transplant treatment for patients requiring kidney and liver procedures. However, the government has yet to provide further details about the programme’s launch and eligibility criteria.
PKLI Rawalpindi Completes Two Liver Transplants
The minister also congratulated PKLI Rawalpindi’s medical staff after the hospital successfully performed two liver transplants.
He described the procedures as a major milestone for the facility and recognised the efforts of its medical teams.
The successful transplants also highlight the hospital’s expanding capacity to provide advanced treatment for patients with serious kidney and liver conditions.

During his visit, Rafique stressed the Punjab government’s focus on providing standardised and world-class healthcare services.
Meanwhile, PKLI Rawalpindi is expanding its advanced healthcare facilities for patients suffering from kidney and liver diseases.
The planned transplant programme adds another significant element to these efforts. Furthermore, the initiative aims to make major transplant procedures available without cost under the provincial government’s programme.
