The Punjab government has launched a new AI-powered monitoring system, Talk to Camera, across the province in an effort to prevent tragic incidents caused by neglected public infrastructure. The rollout follows the heartbreaking death of a seven-year-old boy who fell into an open manhole on the Kahror Pacca–Lodhran Highway last week.
AI System Designed for Real-Time Hazard Detection
According to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the system was developed by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) to enhance public safety and enable faster official response. The AI-powered platform can detect a range of hazards, including open manholes, overflowing dumpsters, damaged infrastructure, and visible smoke, before sending automatic alerts to relevant departments.
Officials explained that the system uses simple natural-language commands, allowing officers to review camera feeds and identify risks instantly. This smart feature is expected to reduce delays in detection and ensure immediate action to protect citizens.
Successful Trials Lead to Province-Wide Rollout
Authorities confirmed that Talk to Camera was initially tested in Lahore and Sheikhupura, where it produced strong results in detecting hazards and improving monitoring efficiency. After the successful trial, the Punjab government approved a province-wide expansion of the AI system.
The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen public safety, modernise city management, and prevent avoidable accidents caused by infrastructural negligence. Officials believe the AI system will significantly improve response times and help safeguard public spaces across Punjab.
