The Punjab government has moved to stop the unauthorized use of official protocol, directing authorities to remove police escorts assigned without valid approval.
The decision follows instructions from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who has ordered immediate implementation of the new restrictions. The provincial government announced the move on October 23, 2026.
Police Escorts Require Official Authorization
According to the notification issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, no individual can receive a permanent police escort without proper authorization.
The restriction applies to provincial cabinet members, advisers, special assistants to the chief minister, parliamentary secretaries, standing committee chairpersons and members of the Provincial Assembly.
Government officers and private individuals are also covered by the instructions.
The notification makes clear that official positions alone do not automatically authorize anyone to use a permanent police escort. Instead, the relevant authorities must verify whether the deployment has received valid approval.
Unauthorized Flags on Vehicles Also Banned
The government has also prohibited people from displaying official flags or using flagstaffs on vehicles unless they are legally entitled to do so.
The measure aims to ensure that official symbols and security arrangements are used only by authorized individuals.
Furthermore, the provincial police chief and Inspector General of Police have been directed to enforce the instructions immediately. They must identify unauthorized police escorts and withdraw them without delay.
Government Orders Immediate Compliance
The latest directive forms part of the Punjab government’s broader efforts to strengthen administrative discipline and improve governance.
Maryam Nawaz has also recently expressed concern over the province’s law and order situation, particularly in Rawalpindi Division.
She directed police officials to intensify action against serious crimes, corruption and illegal possession of weapons. She also gave police four weeks to improve the overall security situation, with particular attention to crimes against women and children.
The new protocol restrictions now require relevant departments to ensure compliance and prevent the unauthorized use of government resources.
