The Punjab government has brought home-based tuition centers, academies and coaching centers under the provincial property tax regime.
The move follows an amendment to the Punjab Private Educational Institutions Act 2026.
The amended law expands the definition of private educational institutions.
It now includes home-based tuition centers, small coaching centers and neighborhood academies.
Educational Properties to Face Tax
Properties used for these educational activities will now be subject to property tax.
Electricity and water connections for such establishments will also be treated as commercial.
Small private schools operating in residential areas will also fall under the new tax rules.
The provisions apply whether the institutions are registered or unregistered.
Private Schools Association Opposes Move
The All-Pakistan Private Schools Colleges Association has criticized the amendment.
The association has called on the Punjab government to withdraw the changes.
It said the new rules could particularly affect women and girls providing tuition from their homes.
Many offer tuition to a small number of children to supplement household incomes.
The association said commercial property and utility charges could increase their operating costs.
It also warned that higher costs could place additional pressure on low-income families.
Calls for Review
The association urged the Punjab government to reconsider the commercial tax provisions.
It called for the amendment to be withdrawn and its impact on small-scale tuition providers to be reviewed.
