Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that the provincial government will begin distributing electric bikes to students on November 5, 2026. The initiative aims to make daily travel easier and improve access to education across the province.
The government plans to provide 100,000 electric bikes under the scheme’s current phase. Officials have also reserved a larger share for female students to support their mobility and independence.
Over 1.2 Million Students Register for Scheme
The electric bike scheme has attracted more than 1.2 million registrations and over 600,000 applications. The strong response highlights the demand for affordable transportation among students.
Students who cannot ride a motorcycle will also receive two days of free driving training. This measure aims to help them use their bikes safely and travel independently to educational institutions.
The scheme forms part of Punjab’s wider efforts to improve student mobility through subsidised transportation.
Green Bus Fare to Remain at Rs20
Maryam Nawaz also announced that Punjab’s fully electric Green Bus service will maintain its Rs20 fare despite rising petrol and diesel prices.
The service currently operates around 700 buses. The provincial government plans to expand the fleet to 3,000 buses over the next six to eight months.
The expansion aims to improve public transport access for residents across Punjab. The government also plans to extend the service to all 148 tehsils in the province.
Free Travel for Selected Passengers
The Green Bus service offers free travel to women, students, senior citizens and people with disabilities.
The buses also feature air conditioning, Wi-Fi and CCTV cameras. These facilities aim to make public transport more accessible and comfortable for passengers.
By expanding electric transport and supporting students through subsidised bikes, the Punjab government is seeking to address mobility challenges while promoting cleaner transportation options.
