ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced its decision to contest the upcoming by-election in NA-129 Lahore, while boycotting by-elections in constituencies where its members were disqualified in the aftermath of the May 9 cases.
The decision was finalized during a virtual meeting of the PTI’s political committee held in Islamabad on Tuesday night. According to a party statement, the committee expressed gratitude to the PTI founder for placing full trust in their leadership. It further stated that all political matters would now be entrusted to the committee for consultation and execution.
Concerns Over Toshakhana Trial
The committee voiced strong concerns over the daily hearings of the Toshakhana trial currently being held inside Adiala Jail. Members argued that such proceedings infringe upon the fundamental rights of the accused and cast doubt on the fairness of the judicial process.
Recognition of Disqualified Members
The statement also highlighted the party’s continued support for PTI leaders recently disqualified in connection with the May 9 cases. The committee paid tribute to them, labeling the convictions as “unjust” and affirming that those members remain the party’s legitimate representatives.
Focus on NA-129 Lahore
The party confirmed that it would field a candidate for Lahore’s NA-129 constituency, which became vacant following the death of veteran politician Mian Azhar, the father of PTI leader Hammad Azhar. PTI leaders believe the constituency holds symbolic and political significance, making it a key battleground in the upcoming polls.
Resignation from Parliamentary Committees
In line with directions from the PTI founder, the political committee also announced the party’s resignation from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly. Furthermore, PTI lawmakers will step down from chairmanships and memberships of other standing committees effective immediately.
With this latest announcement, PTI signaled both its continued participation in Pakistan’s political process and its protest against what it calls unfair disqualifications and trials targeting its members.
