The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has resubmitted a contempt of court petition concerning Imran Khan’s hospital transfer. The petition was filed by his sister, Uzma Khan, before the Supreme Court. It challenges the alleged violation of the court’s August 18 order regarding his medical treatment.
The development followed the Supreme Court registrar’s decision to return the petition after raising certain objections.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said the registrar informed him about the objections. One objection concerned the absence of a dispatched list detailing charges against the respondents.
Gohar said the party would address the objections before submitting the petition again. The PTI has now resubmitted the plea after making the required changes.
Dispute Over Imran Khan’s Hospital Transfer
Uzma Khan previously approached the Supreme Court against authorities over Imran’s treatment arrangements.
The court had directed the government to transfer Imran to Shifa International Hospital within two days. The private hospital was supposed to provide examination and treatment through a multidisciplinary medical board.
However, authorities instead took Imran to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims). He underwent a medical check-up there before authorities returned him to prison.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar attributed the decision to security concerns. He blamed “the security situation created by PTI workers on the way to and outside” the hospital.
Uzma, who attended Imran’s check-up, named several government officials as respondents in her petition. The respondents included Islamabad Chief Commissioner Lieutenant Sohail Ashraf and Interior Secretary Ahmed Raza Sarwar.
Punjab Inspector General Prisons Mian Salik Jalal and Adiala Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig were also named. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and federal ministers Azam Nazeer Tarar and Attaullah Tarar were also respondents.
PTI Seeks Court Intervention
Uzma alleged that the respondents deliberately violated the Supreme Court’s directions. She described the alleged disobedience as wilful and contumacious.
She also requested the court to appoint an officer or local commission. The proposed arrangement would ensure Imran’s immediate transfer to the private hospital.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad chief commissioner approached the Supreme Court separately. He sought an early hearing of his review petition challenging the August 18 order. Gohar also met the Supreme Court registrar on Monday. He was assured that a bench would soon hear the contempt petition.
Meanwhile, Gohar rejected suggestions of a political deal with the government. He maintained that Imran does not make deals and pointed to his continued imprisonment as evidence.
